Montana State University study shows: Alkaline water hydrates you 17% better
A hydration study performed on cyclists by Daniel P Heil shows that Alkaline Ionized Mineral water hydrates you 17% better than plain bottled water. The study looked at 10 male cyclists that were an average of 40 years old. Each of the men in the study participated in two trials each a week a part. One trial was conducted with mineral alkaline water with a 10 pH. The other trial used bottled water that had a pH of 7.
How dehydration during exercise is measured
Dehydration during exercise is measured by tracking your body weight before, during and after exercise. For example, if you lose 2.5% of your body weight during exercise, you are very dehydrated! The author of this article weighs 145 Lbs. 2.5% of the author’s body weight is 3.625 pounds.
Keep in mind that a gallon of water weighs 8.34 pounds, so a loss of less than half a pound (about two quarts of water) means that the author of this article would be dehydrated.
How hydration after exercise is measured
The study had the cyclists exercise until 2.5% of their body weight was lost due to dehydration. When each man had lost 2.5% of his body weight, he then drank either alkaline water or the neutral pH water.
Their hydration level was then determined by comparing the amount of water they drank, to the amount of water they peed out over the next three hours. The more water that each cyclist retained, the better hydrated they were considered to be. The formula used in the study to measure hydration is:
Your body hydration % = [1 – (Total amount of urine/ total amount of water drank) *100].
If you don’t want to do the math, just remember: When you are dehydrated, the less water that you lose to urine, the better!
Why alkaline water hydrates you better than plain water
Cyclists in the study retained 79.2% of the alkaline water they drank, versus. 62.5% of the plain water. In plain terms, the cyclists were about 17% better hydrated by drinking the alkaline water than they were with plain water.
There are competing theories that explain why alkaline water hydrates you better. One is that alkaline water is microclustered. This means that the clusters of water molecules in alkaline water are smaller than the molecule cluster size in plain water. Another theory is that the alkaline pH level of alkaline water is responsible for hydrating you better. Your intestines have a pH of about 8.3, so water with an alkaline pH may be easier for your intestines to absorb.
